Our Mission
The Kallir Research Institute is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the history and legacy of the Galerie St. Etienne (1939-2020) and its founder, Otto Kallir (1894-1978). As authors of catalogues raisonnés on Egon Schiele, Anna Mary Robertson (“Grandma”) Moses and Richard Gerstl, and administrators of the Galerie St. Etienne’s historical archives, the KRI aims to support critical research on Austrian and German Expressionism and self-taught artists.

What We Do
The Kallir Research Institute (KRI) focuses on the artists formerly represented by the Galerie St. Etienne, with especially rich resources on Richard Gerstl, John Kane, Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Käthe Kollwitz, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Anna Mary Robertson (“Grandma”) Moses and Egon Schiele. The KRI archives and library also include a broad range of material on Austrian and German Expressionism, the Wiener Werkstätte and self-taught American and European artists.
The Kallir Research Institute’s archive and library are available to qualified scholars by appointment. Our digital resources include the comprehensive Egon Schiele catalogue raisonné, egonschieleonline.org. Digital catalogues raisonnés for Anna Mary Robertson (“Grandma”) Moses and Richard Gerstl are in preparation. The KRI provides opinions of authenticity on works attributed to Egon Schiele or Grandma Moses.
The Kallir Research Institute curates, consults and coordinates loans for museum exhibitions in its areas of expertise. We also organize and participate in conferences, lectures and panels on Austrian and German Expressionism and self-taught artists.
