    The Kallir Research Institute houses files on each of the exhibitions organized by the Galerie St. Etienne, New York. Files for exhibitions organized by the Neue Galerie, Vienna, are housed at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna and may be accessed at this link.

    The Kallir Research Institute houses the archives of the Galerie St. Etienne, New York (1939-2020). In addition to exhibition files, these include:
    • Research materials for the Egon Schiele catalogue raisonné
    • Research materials for the Grandma Moses catalogue raisonné
    • Research materials for the Richard Gerstl catalogue raisonné
    • Documents relating to the gallery’s representation of Anna Mary Robertson (“Grandma”) Moses, including correspondence with the artist and her family
    • Files on artists represented by the Galerie St. Etienne, including (in addition to Schiele, Moses and Gerstl) Leonard Baskin, Morris Hirshfield, John Kane, Gustav Klimt, Käthe Kollwitz, and Paula Modersohn-Becker
    • Material pertaining to American Views and the Johannes Press, ancillary businesses affiliated with the Galerie St. Etienne

  • Visit

    Access to the Kallir Research Institute’s archives is available to qualified scholars engaged in a specific academic research project. If you would like to conduct research at the KRI, please submit your request in writing, including the following information:

    • Full name and contact information
    • A brief description of the proposed research, its purpose and subject matter
    • A brief description of the specific materials you would like to access
    • A brief bio, including institutional or academic affiliation and contact information
    • A professional letter of reference, for example from a curator, academic colleague, supervisor or thesis advisor
    • A list of dates when you’d like to visit. Appointments are generally made on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10:30 – 5:00. The KRI is not open on weekends.

    Applicants should demonstrate a strong need to examine materials in the archives and will be granted access at the KRI’s sole discretion.
